Our membership supports Community Leadership and Education through our annual Latino Leadership and Awards Dinner. We fund this celebration as a culmination of our recognition of 13 high school Scholarships and 5-6 community members or groups who have helped the local community the most. Annually 13 Seniors are awarded scholarships in such categories as Vocational Education, El Futuro ( Financial aid), Sports, Academics, and the Arts. With four and soon to be 5 high schools and a population of over 80,000 in Tracy we are constantly looking for corporate partnerships to increase both the quantities of scholarships as well as the base amounts.
Besides the scholarships we recognize individuals as well as organizations that reach out to the latino community as mentors or financial support. These local heroes are usually the cream of the crop not just in the latino community but also as whole for Tracy.
We also support both leadership and education in partnership with the Tracy Unified School District, The City of Tracy, and the Tracy African American Association's annual Leadership Conference at The Emma Baumgartner Theartre at Tracy High. This event brings together 30-40 accomplished minority professionals to hold small group discussions of 15-20 students at a time to discuss their lives and/or careers. College professionals are also on hand to discuss the ins and outs of admittance to such Universities such as Stanford or University of California at Berkeley. The end of the event allows for a question and answer session as a panel from anyone in the audience.
Another way we support leadership and education is through the involvement on both the policy as well as service provider committee for the Mayors Community Youth Support Network. This network has been in existence for the past year as way to provide outreach to our local youth and to centralize both public as well as private resources to help at risk youth in preventing drug addiction, abuse, and gangs. While this program is still in its infancy we see a great potential and effective intervention in our community.
